Byrne to Appear on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Release Day

David Byrne has added two New York City dates to the extensive world tour in support of his forthcoming solo record, American Utopia, out this Friday, March 9 via Todomundo/Nonesuch Records; he will also be interviewed and will perform on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert . For the first time since August 1983, during the Talking Heads’ Stop Making Sense tour, Byrne will play Forest Hills Stadium in Queens, on September 15. He has also added a show at Kings Theatre in Brooklyn on September 17.

Byrne will be performing songs from American Utopia, as well as classics from his solo career and his days with Talking Heads. A twelve-piece band joins Byrne on stage for a choreographed, “untethered” concert that he has called “the most ambitious show I’ve done since the ones that were filmed for Stop Making Sense.” Tune-Yards will open the shows in New York.

The album has already received tremendous critical acclaim. Mojo said, “Byrne filters grace, wonder and apocalyptic portent through his fractured worldview. He remains a fine guide through life’s disruptions and disturbances,” and Stereogum noted "American Utopia is an album full of pulsating beats and rich textures. You could also say that about any Talking Heads record, but the new album isn’t a throwback; it feels like it could only exist right now."

Last week, NPR Music’s First Listen began streaming the record in full, saying in its review: "If a brain in a jar could observe the world, make sense of it and churn it into a batch of songs, it would make the album American Utopia." Read the full piece and stream the album here.

The artwork and merch for the tour was designed by New York City artist Stephen Powers. Powers, aka ESPO, is known for creating graffiti, signage, and large-scale public art. He has also created a special set of prints inspired by American Utopia available for a limited time exclusively in the Nonesuch Store: a two-print set, each a three-color screen print, 12"x12" on 335 gsm Coventry Rag, packaged in a hand-stamped LP sleeve (actual LP not included). Each print is a hand-pulled screen print made in Brooklyn at ESPO's Art World. Orders for these hand-made prints will only be taken till Thursday, March 8, at 5pm ET, and include a download of the album available on release day.

Tune-Yards: To call tUnE-yArDs experimental would be an understatement, and to call it an experience still wouldn't do the artist's music justice. Through two albums, and especially on tour dates, tUnE-yArDs is helping audiences reconsider the definition of what music actually is. With dominating percussion, conflicting ambient sounds, and often unpredictable vocals, tUnE-yArDs has created a unique sound that is unlike anything heard in mainstream music. With only two albums out, fans have noticed a considerable stylistic evolution on her most recent album, w h o k i l l and are excited to see how this style will play out on tUnE-yArDs' also wholly unique tour dates in 2011.

A woman named Merrill Garbus, who previously played in the band Sister Suvi, is the brainchild of tUnE-yArDs. A skilled musician, Garbus began experimenting with more of a digital style and recorded music for her debut album on a voice recorder. She then mixed those sounds on her computer, creating the frenzied music that appeared on BiRd-BrAiNs in 2009. Critics couldn't help but take notice, and the album inspired both great reviews and tour dates. The concert performances featured Garbus creating spontaneous drum beats, then singing and playing the ukulele over the loop.

Finding it hard to incorporate bass live, she brought in Nate Brenner, who also contributed heavily to tUnE-yArDs' most recent album, w h o k i l l. The album has received overwhelming acclaim and has prompted international tour dates in 2011. After performing at Outside Lands and Pukelpop in August, tUnE-yArDs will head to the UK and Western Europe on September 2. On September 19, she will begin a tour of the US that will last until late November. Don't miss this opportunity to catch a one-of-a-kind performance and buy your tickets on Eventful today!
