With Music Producer, Lecturer and Historian Robert L. Cohen
French Composer Maurice Ravel once wrote, “I was attracted to the strange and haunting beauty of Jewish music. I felt as though I had been brought into a new musical world. I was bewitched by the mysterious color and exotic charm of these melodies.” Especially in the 20th century, composers in many different genres - American, European, even Caribbean - have drawn on Jewish melodies for their classical, popular, jazz, and folk compositions. Mr. Cohen will take us on an audio tour through some of the results - acknowledged and unacknowledged, conscious and (maybe) unconscious - and find out why one (Jewish) composer once said, “In music, there is no Eighth Commandment.”
Free and open to all, light refreshments and coffee will be served.
